Asymptomatic cardiac rhabdomyoma in neonates: is surgery indicated?

چکیده
BACKGROUND Neonatal Tuberose sclerosis complex may be associated with symptomatic cardiac rhabdomyomas. Cardiac rhabdomyomas are the most common cardiac tumours. The symptoms include haemodynamic instability and life threatening arrhythmias usually requiring early surgical intervention. RESULTS We report a case of a 32 week gestation newborn diagnosed with a right ventricular outflow tract mass and subsequently diagnosed with tuberose sclerosis that needed early surgical intervention. CONCLUSION While this case needed early intervention, the need for surgical intervention in otherwise asymptomatic cases is debatable as neonatal cardiac rhabdomyomas can spontaneously regress.

Rapid Regression of Obstructive Cardiac Rhabdomyoma in a Preterm Neonate after Sirolimus Therapy
Cardiac rhabdomyoma can be subclinical or fatal depending on the onset age, involving site, and the size and degree of invasion. Although most rhabdomyomas become smaller with time, emergency intervention is indicated when severe obstruction induces hemodynamic instability. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors have been used to treat neonates and children with hemodynamically obstruc...
متن کاملConservative management of a left ventricle cardiac fibroma in an asymptomatic child patient.
Primary cardiac tumors in infancy and childhood are rare and usually benign. Fibroma is the second most common bening cardiac tumor after rhabdomyoma. Surgery is required when fibromas cause ventricular outflow tract obstruction, ventricular dysfunction and life-threatening arrhythmia. This case report describes a 9-year-old asymptomatic male presenting with a giant left ventricular cardiac fib...
متن کاملCase Report Cardiac Rhabdomyoma — A Case Report
Cardiac tumors are rare in neonates, most are rhabdomyomas. Because of large size, they may cause homodynamic instability and even death in neonatal period. In 50% cases, rhabdomyoma is associated with tuberous sclerosis [1]. About 100 cases have been reported in literature [1, 3]. We are reporting a case of term neonate, with antenatally diagnosed cardiac masses, who expired at 36 h of life an...
متن کاملSpontaneous Regression of Huge Cardiac Rhabdomyoma in An Infant
Rhabdomyomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors in childhood, and are often associated with tuberous sclerosis. We report a huge rhabdomyoma in an asymptomatic four hour old infant who presented initially with a murmur due to moderate subaortic stenosis. Followup showed regression of the tumour. Although the indications for surgical resection of symptomatic tumors are well established, ...
متن کاملA newborn infant with intrapericardial rhabdomyosarcoma: a case report.
Cardiac tumors are uncommon in neonates and most of them are histologically benign. The most common cardiac tumor in neonates and infants is rhabdomyoma. Malignant cardiac tumors are considerably rarer, and rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the leading malignancy. To our knowledge, only one case of intrapericardial RMS was reported in the literature, in a seven-month-old baby. Here we present another n...
